The Program will arrange for your housing accommodations while you are responsible for paying your rent. This is helpful to the participants in many ways: no apartment hunting, shared apartments and rent, and a strong sense of camaraderie with roommates who are participants in the program and have similar academic backgrounds.
Roommates are selected in our office, making the housing process even easier for participants.
An advance listing and phone numbers will be supplied. It is possible for you to sublease an alternative apartment. However, you must make alternative arrangements on your own. You would need to make a trip to Blacksburg prior to the starting date of the program to finalize your housing.
The apartments are furnished with items such as beds, desks, a sofa, table, chairs, microwave, TV, etc. However, things like cutlery, cookware, linens, DVD players, and computers are not provided. You should contact your roommates to determine who will bring what items to the apartment. Alternatively, a housewares package can be purchased that includes linens, cookware, dishes, flatware, and other necessary household amenities.
Although 2016 rates have not yet been established, for budgeting purposes, the average rent for a 4-BR apartment (furnished - see below) with 4 roommates in 2014 was ~$2,609.75 per person for the entire program period. (Note: This amount includes the deposit of $386.50 - which is "anticipated" to be returned at the end of the 11 weeks.)
Apartments:
Each apartment is equipped with central air conditioning and features a full size living room, dining room, kitchen (with dishwasher and garbage disposal), and at least 1-1/2 baths.
Furniture:
Bedroom: Twin bed (no headboard), chest, nightstand, lamp, student desk, and chair.
Living room: 1 sofa, 1 chair, 1 end table, 1 cocktail table, 2 lamps, television, TV stand.
Dining Room/Kitchen: 1 table, 4 chairs, microwave. Optional housewares package includes all towels, linens, cookware, plates, cups, utensils, pillows, alarm clocks, etc.
