MII has devoted much attention to the education and professional development of undergraduate and graduate students.  On campus we have earned a reputation for devoting a very high percentage of our funding to student development.  Off-campus, our alumni have also earned a reputation for strong academic training, broad interdisciplinary skills, and good communication capabilities.  Since 1982 when the Institute was founded, we have graduated over 400 students.  We averaged 35 graduating students per year, half of whom have receive either their MS or PhD degree.

Postdoctoral Openings at Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences, Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Two postdoctoral positions are available immediately in the Macromolecular Nanomaterials Group at the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), focusing on theory and simulation of dynamics and rheology of dynamically-bonded polymers [e.g. Nature Materials 10, 14-27 (2011)], in collaboration with the synthetic chemists and experimental polymer physicists in the same group as well as the researchers from the Spallation Neutron Source and the Computer Science and Mathematics Division at ORNL.

 

Interested candidates should have a solid background in theory/simulation of soft materials. The appointments will initially be for 24 months with a possibility of an extension of up to 12 months. Faculty Position in Polymer Science and Engineering (Posted 09.11.2015)

Job Summary: The University of Southern Mississippi invites applications for two (2) full-time, nine-month, tenure-track faculty in the area of polymer science and engineering in the School of Polymers and High Performance Materials (SPHPM) within the College of Science and Technology (Hattiesburg Campus) to begin in fall 2016.  Applicants with demonstrated expertise in either a) physical polymer science or b) polymer engineering are particularly encouraged to apply.  Applicants with exceptional records of creativity, originality, and excellence in research and teaching will be considered at ranks of assistant or associate professor.

Duties/Responsibilities: It is expected that the successful candidate will build an internationally recognized, externally funded research program in his/her area of expertise, direct graduate student research, and contribute to the functioning of the department, college, university and scientific community through professional service. The successful candidate must also be capable of teaching polymer science and engineering courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in collaborative research proposals and projects involving advanced materials across departmental and disciplinary boundaries with private, state and federal funding entities.  

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must hold an earned Ph.D. in polymer science and engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering or a closely related discipline, and possess a demonstrated record of intellectual and academic accomplishments that will qualify her or him for appointment at the appropriate level. Other required qualifications include strong leadership and interpersonal skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, an ability to work in a collaborative environment, and a commitment to promoting and embracing diversity.

 

Preferred Qualifications:  Candidates with postdoctoral research experience, a strong publication record and demonstrated success in proposal writing are preferred.

A tenure-track faculty position in Computational Polymer Science is available starting Fall 2016 in the Department of Coatings and Polymeric Materials in conjunction with the Center for Sustainable Materials Science (CSMS) at North Dakota State University. CSMS is an interdisciplinary center that carries out research and education on a cradle-to-cradle approach to sustainable materials, with a current focus on materials from renewable resources. The faculty member will have a focus on approaches to computer simulation of polymer systems, prediction of polymer properties from polymer composition, and/or development of QSAR from combinatorial experimental data. Research interests that strongly complement the activities of CSMS are of high importance. The appointment is expected to be at the Assistant Professor level, however candidates with exceptional qualifications may be appointed to a higher rank. Salary is commensurate with experience. Candidates for this position must have a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Statistics or a related field, a strong potential to develop an externally-funded, nationally competitive research program, commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as strong oral and written communication skills. Converse College invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Chemistry, a nine-month, tenure-track appointment to begin in August 2016. The successful candidate will be expected to teach general chemistry and upper level courses in physical chemistry.  Interdisciplinary work (research or teaching) with physics is encouraged but not required. 

 

A Ph.D. in Chemistry with emphasis on physical chemistry at the time of appointment is required. A postdoctoral research position in the area of polymer science is immediately available.  The successful candidate will work jointly with Dr. Derek Patton in the School of Polymers at the University of Southern Mississippi and Dr. Kathryn Beers in the Materials Science and Engineering Division at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).  The position will be permanently stationed at NIST in Gaithersburg, MD. The project focuses on the development of metrologies to elucidate the structure and interactions of advanced polyolefins at interfaces.  The position requires familiarity in synthetic organic chemistry, especially organometallic catalysis and “living” coordinative chain transfer polymerizations.  The preparation and characterization of polyolefin samples with well-defined molar mass distributions and copolymer compositions is essential to the project and will require introduction of technical expertise to both research groups.  The candidate will have a Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, polymer science and engineering, materials science and engineering, or a related field.  Independence, creativity, and good communication skills are essential. The initial appointment is for one year.
